BCH is the pioneer - 34 villages (Assam, West Bengal, odisha: february 2020 to august 2024) adopted for door to door cancer screening awareness-education, treatment, management, palliative care & epidemiological research study. more in progress

Breast Cancer Hub's grassroots solutions in BCH Adopted Villages, taking care of each patient for All types of Suspicious Cases of Cancers. Door-to-door Cancer screening-awareness, Diagnosis, Treatment Management Aid and Counselling. We go to each house, generating awareness, teaching Breast Self-Exam, Self-Oral Screening, discussing signs & symptoms of all other cancers, and providing BCH Early detection cards (All Cancers) for each family. From no awareness, now each & every family has become aware of symptoms of Cancers after our penetration. We monitor & manage each suspicious case individually, case by case. We take the suspicious cases to hospitals, for further screening, diagnosis, and treatment. We collaborate with the hospitals providing treatment at subsidized rates under the government-aided schemes but the remaining treatment expenses, BCH covers. The villagers are daily wage earners living a hand-to-mouth existence without any savings. On many occasions, there is no person in the family to accompany the patient to the hospital, eventually delaying or skipping treatment. BCH team takes care end to end, starting from providing transport, purchasing medicines, diagnostic tests, that are not covered under the government schemes. BCH team assists the patients by taking them to the hospital, helping with income certificate, government health cards, hospital registration, patient communication with the doctor, accompanying them in the full diagnosis process, buying necessary medicines, dropping them home with follow-ups & counseling. BCH provides treatment aid to the poor and needy and before giving the Aid, our team conducts background verification of the economic status of the family of the patient. We take accountability of each case, helping them from beginning to end, maintaining database of each member.

The thoughts of village adoption…started from Bhorakhai tea garden area, Assam, India..

the inception of village adoption…

Comes from an emotional drive, I met an 18 year old girl during the camp/outreach in Bhorakhai, Cachar, Assam on July 28, 2019. After my session, the girl was in tears & mentioned “why didn’t you come to my village last year, my mother just died of Breast Cancer as she was not aware of the signs & symptoms and was also shy to speak about it due to Breast “Taboo”. That’s when I made the decision as a promise to myself- No more Lives to be Lost due to ignorance & stigma from this village. BCH wing-Oral Cancer Hub initiated - during the outreaches, I realized that Tobacco chewing is existent in mostly each & every household in North-east India & people are ignorant about the deleterious effects leading to Cancer & more specifically oral cancer with no early detection screening performed. BCH wing- Cervical Cancer Hub came into existence as Cervical Cancer is one of the Top cancers in India with hardly any screening done & women are not aware of the signs & symptoms. Through our Lung, Colon, Stomach, & other Hubs, we are geneating awarenes for other types of Cancers.

We conduct door to door Breast Cancer Screening, Oral Cancer Screening & discuss the signs & symptoms of Cervical, Colon, Stomach, Lung, Head & neck & other type of Cancers. We package the BCH Early Detection Cancer Screening Cards & provide to each household. Any suspicious cases, we take to Cancer Hospital for further diagnosis. We take care of Cancer Treatment, Management & palliative care. We take accountability of each patient. We discuss Cancer preventable measures & campaign against Tobacco consumption.

Cachar, Assam - 18 villages till August 2024

We take the suspicious cases to Cachar Cancer Hospital (CCH) for further diagnosis and treatment. The director of CCH is Padma Shri recipient Dr. Ravi Kannan. Or we take our patients to Silchar Medical College for the villages we adopted in the Cachar district, Assam. The hospitals provide treatment in subsidized rate under the government Aided schemes.

ASSAM: BCH Villages Adoption in India (February 2020 onwards): 18 villages in Cachar District, Assam.

Here’s the detailed information of the villages BCH adopted in Assam: Bantarapur is a habitat of people belonging to Manipuri (Meitei) community. The habitat comes under following revenue villages, Sunadiri Part-II, Sundari Part-III, Sundari Part-IV, Boalihaor, Sentcatherine and falls under Sonai Development Block. Sundari-II falls under Hatikhal Gaon Panchayat and Sundari –III & IV, Boali and Sentcatherine falls under Sundari Gaon Panchayat. Most of the families of these villages are dependent on Agriculture for livelihood along with people working in other sectors. Bhorakhai is one of the divisions of Silcoorie Tea Eastate. It comes under Borjalenga Development Block of Cachar District. People of this area mostly belong to the Bhojpuri, Desuali and Bengali communities and are economically backward. Most of the people of this area work in Silcoorie Tea Estate and others sustain through daily wage-earning activities.  Villages under Hatikhal Gaon panchayat selected are Bidruhi Par, Sundari Part-I, Sundari Part-II, Bhaurikandi Part-I, Bhaurikandi Part-I and Dharamkhal Division of Silcoorie Tea Estate. Majority of the people under Hatikhal Gaon Panchayat belong to the Muslim community, Maimals (fishermen being the occupation) along with Agriculture. Most of the people of Dharamkhal are daily wage earners, working in Silcoorie Tea Estate. Majority of the families of these villages are financially/economically extremely challenged and categorized under Below Poverty Line.

The 18 Villages BCH adopted since February 2020: Sundari Part-I, Sundari Part-II, Sundari Part-III, Sundari Part-IV, Boali Haor, Sentcatherine, Bidruhipar, Baurikhandi Part-I, Baurikhandi Part-II, Kachudaram Part-I, Kachudaram Part-II,Kachudaram Part-III, Kachudaram Part-IV, Bariknagar Part -I, Bariknagar Part-II, Saidpur Part-II and Dakshin Mohanpur) and one tea garden area (Silocoorie Tea Estate). More in progress

Impact & Success: FEBRUARY 2020 - November 2023: Breast Cancer Hub (BCH) screened 20,000 Villagers in the 17 Villages BCH adopted in Cachar Assam, India between February 2020-November 2023 (More in progress) executing Door to door cancer screening, Treatment Management, Follow-ups with support & counseling. We detected 229 suspicious cases of Breast, Cervical, Oral & Other cancers

2. In all the villages, the population was ~100% NOT AWARE on Cancer signs & symptoms before BCH penetrated. After our door to door screening awareness, everyone is alert of Breast & Oral Self screening examination and have become conscious. Most of the people link their diseases to spiritual or religious myths. Therefore, most of the time for any disease villagers prefer going to local faith healers. In this process they lose their valuable time for proper treatment, ultimately leading to death.

Each & every family has now become aware about symptoms of cancer especially, Breast, Oral and Cervical, & other types of Cancer and BCH team has become the bridge to connect with healthcare system, taking accountability of each patient, their treatment, transport, care, counselling & management.

3. Anti-TOBACCO CAMPAIGN: BCH team’s anti-tobacco campaign is helping, and the villagers are trying to reduce or eliminate.

4. Patient treatment Management: 229 Suspicious cases of Breast, Cervical, Oral, Colon and other types of Cancers. We monitor & manage each suspicious case individually, case by case. We take the suspicious cases to Cachar Cancer Hospital, or Silchar Medical College, for further screening, diagnosis, and treatment. The hospitals provide treatment at subsidized rates under the government-aided schemes & we are thankful for their services but the remaining treatment expenses, BCH covers. BCH team assists the patients by taking them to the hospital, helping with income certificate, AAA card, hospital registration, patient communication with the doctor, accompanying them in the full diagnosis process, buying necessary medicines, dropping them home with follow-ups & counseling.

5. Covid-19 Response: Food relief to 674 Families (4289 villagers, starving, in need), extremely poor families starving due to lockdown constraints, in the villages BCH adopted for Cancer Screening & Treatment. Strategy: We respect the dignity of each person who lost their daily wage-earning to Lockdown, so we maintain database & reach out to the utmost need with follow-ups & go to their doorstep. Food Relief continues.

BCH helped implement and execute health and safety measures via Covid-19 awareness, mask & sanitizer distribution, enforcing guidelines and helping to prevent covid-19 spread in market places with local vendors and public gatherings.

WHY THE RATION FOOD RELIEF IN

BCH ADOPTED

BHORAKHAI AREA? We maintain

Database of 222 Families

BCH team has been working in this area since 15th February 2020 for “Adopt A Village-Bhorakhai” for Breast, Oral, Cervical Cancer Screening-Cancer Care, Treatment & Management. Due to Covid-19 lock down BCH team also kept on monitoring the situation of the people of this area on humanitarian ground. We found the families were eating rice with salt water and chilli due to poverty because of no work due to Covid-19 lockdown as they belonged to daily wage-earning occupation – at tea garden, construction work, brick factory etc, they were almost running out of food stock.

Our Strategy: We respect the dignity of each person as they work hard for their living but now in this situation due to Covid-19 crisis, they are helpless. So, we decided to go to each household & provide food to their doorsteps so that they don’t have to wait in queue or plead for food. Database: We maintain database of 222 Families.

April 11, 12, 15, 2020: FIRST FOOD RELIEF RATION (426 individuals)- Potato, Masoor Daal, Sugar, Salt, Oil, Dettol soap for hygiene.

April 22, 2020: SECOND ROUND FOOD RATION Replenishment for BCH Adopted 106 Families (459 individuals) at Bhorakhai area Tea Garden, Assam- Whole Chana, Masoor Daal, Oil, Sugar, Dettol, Detergent

May 06, 2020: 3rd Round Food Ration Relief -106 families (459 members) increased to 130 Families (580 individuals)-Whole Chana, Masoor Daal, Nutrela Soyabean, Oil, Sugar, LifeBuoy Soap, Detergent

May 31, 2020: 4th Round Food Ration Relief- 35 families (130 members): The relief kit includes: Masoor Dal (lentil), Gota chana (Chola), Ata (Wheat), Sugar, Biscuit, Mustard oil, salt, Soya bean chunks, lifebuoy soap (antiseptic), detergent cake, lady finger (Okra). We also gave one mask each to the kit.

June 08, 2020: 5th Round Food Ration Relief: 49 Families (221 members): The relief kit includes: Masoor Dal, Arhar Dal, Soya bean chunk, Salt, Sugar, Soap (antiseptic)and detergent cake

Masks provided for our Bhorakhai Area: BCH purchased masks from Bhoomi Women's Trust , Assam, so that we can be proactive & make sure our Bhorakhai residents take all safety measures while getting back to work. We are distributing masks to the workers in the village who is at utmost need

Total number of individuals benefitted: 1st Round Food Relief (426)+ 2nd Round Food Relief (459) + 3rd Round Food Relief (580) + Masks Recipient (308)+ 4th Round Food Relief (130); 5th Round Food Relief (221) = 2,124 individuals.

Database: We maintain database of 222 Families. 106 families from 1st & 2nd round + 52 Families added to our database who needed Relief for 3nd round = (106+52= 158 Families). For 4th Round (35 families recieved Relief) & 23 new families added. For 5th Round: 49 families received relief & 33 new Families added. In addition, we are closely monitoring 8 more families who might need to be added to the relief in future, so we now have a database of 222 Families we are closely monitoring.

Why we need to continue with Food relief at Bhorakhai area & WHy the number of Families increased?

Justification for 3rd Round: During this crisis, there was relaxation for Tea Workers and they resumed their work week of 27th April. Few other workers also could resume work. All together 28 people resumed work. But there are still many who are not allowed to go out for work due to continued lockdown. Therefore we are compelled to take the endeavor for 3rd relief replenishment. Since BCH team is constantly monitoring the situation of Bhorakhai area, we have observed that no other organization or individual have come for relief work since 17th April except BCH. There are 52 families which were sustaining on relief received from other agencies but they are now struggling since they were not replenished. Therefore, BCH decided to include them as well in our 3rd round of replenishment.

Justification for 4th Round: BCH team has been constantly monitoring the situation of people of Bhorakhai with the help of local volunteers. Since 4th May people of this area also have been trying to resume their work. But unfortunately there are few people who could not get any employment. According to our field survey, few families who are mostly daily wage earners, Cart Puller, Rikshaw Puller, house-keeping workers, Construction workers are facing very hard time to meet their tow time proper nutritious meal.

Justification for 5th Round: BCH team is constantly monitoring the Bhorakhai Tea Garden Area (Puran Line, Lamba Tila, Kalwa Tila, Ranga Tila) for Ration Food Replenishment. We observed that many families were still eating rice with choukha (smashed potato) or Chatni or tea. They were not getting regular work. Due to high transportation cost (revised higher rate of local transport fare), they couldn’t afford to go to the main town (Silchar) to resume work & their livelihood. We added 33 new families to our database & now we have 222 Families to monitor.

A BIG SHOUT OUT TO OUR DONORS FROM ALL THE BENEFICIARIES (222 FAMILIES, 2, 124 individuals)...We couldn't have contiued to give ration relief without your support..

Acknowledgement: A big thank you to our Project Coordinator Sanalembi Devi and Our Field Worker Sapna Pashi from Borakhai tea garden- who analyzed the situation & brought this up to me. Respect & Dignity

We decided to go to each household & provide food to their doorsteps so that they don’t have to wait in queue or plead for food as they are hard working daily wage earners & brought into this situation with no work due Covid19 lockdown.

RATION FOOD RELIEF (THE FIRST ROUND)

We provided the first food relief (RATION- potato, Lentil, sugar, salt, oil, Dettol soap for hygiene) on 11th ,12th February & 15th February. We decided to adopt 106 families, with total 459 members in Borakhai tea garden & we will replenish their food so that they do not starve till the lockdown is over & villagers get back to their daily wage. We have collected all the information of these families so that we can immediately replenish the food by monitoring closely.

OUR STRATEGY: We respect the dignity of each person as they work hard for their living but now in this situation due to Covid-19 crisis, they are helpless. So, we decided to go to each household & provide food to their doorsteps so that they don’t have to wait in queue or plead for food. We have a database of all the 166 families, we will monitor & replenish the ration.

A BIG SHOUT OUT TO OUR DONORS & THANK YOU FROM THE BENEFICIERIES...Bhorakhai Area

BCH is thankful to be able to provide Masks in Utmost Need

Sanalembi Devi, Our Bhorakhai Project Coordinator, brought to my attention that she found women & men heading to work at Tea garden but not wearing proper masks. Women were tying piece of cloth around their face while lifting huge weight over their head. We immediately took the decision to provide good quality masks and we are thankful to Mr. Mr. D. N Singh, Deputy Manager, Silcoorie Tea Estate for giving us the permission from Tea Garden Management as Masks are huge crisis.

BCH purchased 300 masks from Bhoomi Women's Trust so that we can be proactive & make sure our Bhorakhai residents take all safety measures while getting back to work. We distributed 278 to the workers & more will be given to the other people in the village who is at utmost need. BCH team is thankful to be of service to the Bhorakhai Tea Garden Area. We used some of our Covid 19 Project donation towards purchasing the masks.

Sanalembi Devi beautifully explains how to use Masks as BCH Distributes Masks to Bhorakhai Area

Regarding Masks from BCH: Testimonial from Mr. D. N Singh, Deputy Manager, Silcoorie Tea Estate. Mr. Singh is very appreciative that BCH could provide masks to the Tea Garden workers as there is a huge crisis & scarcity of masks and it's very essential & needed for the safety of the people with Covid 19 scenario.

BCH executes Health & Safety measures Covid-19

Awareness, Mask & Sanitizer Distribution, enforcing guidelines

BCH helps implement & execute Health & Safety Measures via Awareness, Mask & Sanitizer Distribution, enforcing guidelines in collaboration with the Local organizations & authorities helping to prevent Covid 19 spread in Market Places with Local Vendors & in Public gatherings. #2GetherWeR1

Since 4th May, 2020, there have been some relaxation on the lockdown norms in Cachar district, Assam. Accordingly, business activities of Bantarapur also geared up slowly and gradually. There are two main market places in Bantarapur, “Sukurbari Bazar” and “Sonibari Bajar”. Sukurbari Bazar usually held on Monday and Friday. Sonibari Bazar usually held on Tuesday and Saturday. In both the markets local farmers come with their products such as seasonal vegetables, fish, egg, fruits, Puffed & Flattened Rice etc Due to the relaxation, the local vendors started selling their products in the market and people gradually started visiting these marketplaces on large scale. Since the outbreak of Covis-19 pandemic, the BCH team has been closely monitoring the ground situation of Bantarapur area. BCH field staff visited the market places to check how the preventative measures of Covid-19 were practiced in the market areas since these are the places where mass gathering was happening, vulnerable for spread of infection.

Following very serious observations were made: 1. Most of the people were without Mask in the market area. 2. Masks are not worn properly by the people. 3. People were not maintaining physical distance. 4. There is no hand sanitization facility or hand wash facility in the market area. 5. Children below 10 years and elderly people above 60 were seen in the market places without any urgent work. 6. Sonibari Bazar was not allowed to open as a preventive measure by the local people. Being helpless, the poor vegetable and agriculture product vendors sit on the road-side which made situation very challenging to maintain physical distance. 7. Cotton Masks are not available in the village market.

Taking into consideration, the urgency of the situation, the BCH team at first discussed the matter with Mrs. Momota Singha (Panchayat President of Sundari Gaon Panchayat), village elderly people and leaders, Members of Bazar Committees, members of Self Help Groups, Linthoingambi Mairalup, members of Rising Club, Bantarapur Manipuri Women Voluntary Welfare Association. We are very thankful to all the groups for supporting BCH and It is very encouraging that the people of Bantarpur unanimously & voluntarily came forward taking the call of BCH team to prepare Bantarapur village in preventing Covid-19 infection, through maintaining physical distance, wearing mask, washing hand frequently and staying at home specifically kids below 10 years and elderly people above 60 years.

Following preliminary activities were taken up as preventive measure at market place: 1. Drawing circles on the floor 2. Constructing barricade with bamboo and rope. 3. Demarcating of entry and exit point at the market place to ensure hand sanitization and wearing of mask at the entrance itself. Drops of Hand sanitizer is given to all the people entering the market place by BCH team & volunteers. 4. Monitoring of the market area by local women (Mairapaibi) or members of SHG Group to ensure Mask wearing and maintenance of physical distance on 22nd May’20 and 23rd May’20 at Sukrubari Bazar and Sonibari Bazar respectively. 5. Distribution of Mask to all the vendors and some of the visitors also who do not have proper mask. At Sukrubari Market total of 87 Masks were distributed on 22nd May’20. At Sonibari Market total of 61 Masks were distributed 23rd May’20. BCH is purchasing another 200 masks for Bantarapur to be distributed.

We take measures for each VENDOR & CUSTOMER entering the market: May 25: 2020: Bantarapur Market Place (Sukurbari Bazar-Monday, Friday). May 26, 2020: Bantarapur Market Place (Sonibari Bazar-Tuesday, Saturday): BCH Covid 19 protection protocol execution continues with masks distribution, Sanitization & hand washing measures taken, social distance & awareness implemented. May 29,2020:Sukurbari Bazaar, Bantarapur, Cachar, Assam: BCH team Continues Strict Covid 19 Safety Execution & Awareness: Restricting kids & older population in Public Places, Masks donated to each person & Sanitization Done. BCH purchased Masks from Bhoomi Women's Trust & Ladies Group. BCH purchased the Sanitizers from Dey's Medical Store.

We would like to thank our BCH Donors for your Covid 19 Contribution... without you, we couldn't have continued the process.

Feedback from Residents and Business owners:

1. One elderly woman who sells vegetables produced in her farm was surprised to see the sanitization and other preventive arrangements in the market place. She told to BCH coordinator that she had been wishing for such arrangement of sanitization but she did not know whom to tell. But now she is very happy and thanked BCH for such initiative. 2. One lady who was wearing a synthetic mask becomes very happy to get a cotton mask. Since it is very hot weather synthetic masks are not comfortable. 3. After observing the preparation of BCH team & volunteers and local women groups along with members of Sundari Panchayat, the owner of the market allowed the vendors for the first time after lockdown to enter the market and do their business. He said that if we make such arrangement for sanitization and physical distancing then there is no problem in opening the market area.
