About Dr. C.S. Das, tribute from his Student & Patient

A Tribute to a Father.. Late Dr Chandra Sekhar Das by Dr Lopamudra Das Roy

“My life came to a standstill on 22nd February 2020, as Dr. Chandra Sekhar Das, evolved to the path of eternity. A doting father, who always cared for his family, friends, students, colleagues, and most importantly, his patients, as I can’t recall a single day growing up, when my grandfather Dr. Kripanath Das, and my father Dr. C.S Das wouldn’t discuss a complicated case as anonymous, keeping the patient privacy intact. Dr. Das led the simplest life, with no desire for any materialistic belongings, but yes, he was always hungry to read and learn more and was the epitome of knowledge yet filled with humility, with the purity of heart always in appreciation of others, especially his students who embarked the pathway of fame in the arena of pediatrics and healthcare system.

Wish everything was in his favor. Early in his career, when I was a kid, he faced a severe urinary tract infection and was rushed to Kolkata for further treatment. I recollect the glimpses after his return, it took him days to regain his strength as the infection took a toll, though he was saved with the highest dose of medications, but the side effects partially damaged his kidneys. While growing up, Baba told me, “My kidneys will eventually give up on me, but I hope I don’t get diabetes or high BP which would trigger the process”. As destiny would have it, with a predominant family history, Baba succumbed to high diabetes and unmanageable blood pressure, drivers to his kidney failure, despite leading the most disciplined lifestyle, under the strict dietary guidance of my mother, Mrs. Rita Das. It always surprised me, in spite of knowing his days numbered, he never complained about his fate, but always embraced the situation with his witty intellectual remarks, lighting up the room with smiles, and his patent statement, “I am very good”.

In February 2019, when Baba went through all the procedures to get into the dialysis regime in Bangaluru, I couldn’t stop arguing with him, as he was adamant to return to Assam, to his home, to his people, leaving a better medical infrastructure in Bengaluru. He clearly told me, “Please don’t try to extend my life, but let me be happy, and serving my patients gives me immense gratification”.

I understood the in-depth meaning later, during his funeral procession when innumerable people walked with him to the cremation ground, condolences poured in from all across the town, the state, the country, and abroad, and the aura of his unique humane touch unfolded with stories from his students, colleagues, patients from all economic sectors including the underprivileged whom he served free, and in addition paid for their investigations and treatments but never mentioned to us.  Everyone from the larger community told me, “Your father was very close to me” and I wondered how one person can be loved so much from all spheres of society.

I then realized the bigger truth, my father never belonged to me. He was here with a purpose bigger than his life, as he belonged to everyone, with the passion and dedication to keep serving. He did not want to earn any accolades but was counting on the blessings, truly a legend, who departed to infinity but is immortal in the hearts of each of us, his supreme reward.

We all miss you..

Dr Lopamudra Das Roy (Daughter of Dr. C.S Das)”

Mission Statement from Dr Das:
My one sorrow in life was that my daughter Dr Lopamudra Das Roy did not become a physician in her life and took up Research. But now I am doubly happy that she has become someone trying to find a cure for Cancer through her research.
I am really enjoying being associated with her selfless dedicated activities as she founded Breast Cancer Hub as her full-time probono humanitarian service in 2017. Her work in the community to detect early and/or prevent breast cancer and other cancers through 100% free services is a unique concept; her whole family has become so involved. I appreciate the efforts and am sure this project will rock the world.
