SOHINI CHAKRABORTY
BCH India - Silchar Ambassador
Region: Silchar, India
I'm Sohini Chakraborty from Silchar, Assam (a north-eastern state), India. I belong to a family of self-made achievers. My father, Mr. Kamal Chakraborty, is an ex-serviceman and lately been a dedicated voluntary social activist. My mother, Mrs. Sreelekha Sengupta, is a servicewoman in the Federal Bank Pvt. Ltd. I am a bioinformatics enthusiast. I've been doing some voluntary research (Biocurator) on n-CoV 19 (COVID-19) in a project (COVID metadatabase) at IBAB, Bengaluru, India. I have completed post-graduation in Biomedical Genetics from the Vellore Institute of Technology, Vellore. And now that I'm a part of the Breast Cancer Hub, I sincerely hope to contribute my part of service for the betterment of the society. I am passionate about research into the fields of molecular biology and structural bioinformatics. Also, I'm associated with an animal rescue center where we relay adoptions of stray animals. I believe they deserve the same amount of care and comfort as humans do. Coming to my hobbies, I'm really into Indian classical music and dance as I've received years of training in these.
Mission Statement:
I have grown up in a region with lots of taboos regarding the words coming out of our mouth. The words 'breast', 'periods' 'sexual intercourse', etc. are just some of the many I can think of right now. As I have grown throughout these years, I have developed a sense of urgency and utmost need to make women, men and children understand things important for their health. Lack of awareness has made society, specifically, women, neglect their body, the signs their body gives before a fatality. It is, therefore, extremely important to make the society well aware of their health and hygiene. Women in India, specifically in a small town like Silchar and its outskirts, are hesitant to discuss things like periods or any aspect of reproductive health out in the open. They are unaware of the concept of self-examination, shy enough to even open up about their bodily discomforts to doctors. All these sum up to push the individual towards the fatal stage of a disease. This needs to be prevented. And it's only possible by breaking the ice between science and the societal mentalities. I sincerely hope to do my best towards contributing my fraction of help and support for a better and healthy society. And I believe the Breast Cancer Hub is just the right forum to get to know how things are done, how beautifully lives are saved, and how strongly a word can be spread. I also have a long-term vision to organize something on the concepts of genetics, genetic testing etc. in my hometown as these are unexplored areas of modern science in the region where I've grown up.
